Más dicsérjen téged, és ne a te szájad, az idegen, és ne a te ajkad.

Dicsérjen meg téged más, és ne a te szájad; az idegen, és ne a te ajkaid.

Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

Să te laude altul, nu gura ta, un străin, nu buzele tale.

Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.

Súlyos a kő, és nehéz a homok, de a bolond haragja nehezebb mindkettőnél.

Nehézség van a kőben, és teher a fövényben; de a bolondnak haragja nehezebb mind a kettőnél.

A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both.

Piatra este grea şi nisipul este greu, dar supărarea pe care o pricinuieşte nebunul este mai grea decât amândouă. –

A stone is heavy, and sand is weighty, but a fool’s provocation is heavier than both.

A búsulás kegyetlenséget szül és túláradó haragot, de ki állhatna meg az irigységgel szemben?

A búsulásban kegyetlenség [van,] és a haragban áradás; de ki állhatna meg az irígység előtt?

Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

Furia este fără milă şi mânia năvalnică, dar cine poate sta împotriva geloziei? –

Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?

Jobb a nyilvánvaló dorgálás a titkolt szeretetnél.

Jobb a nyilvánvaló dorgálás a titkos szeretetnél.

Open rebuke is better than secret love.

Mai bine o mustrare pe faţă, decât o prietenie ascunsă. –

Better is open rebuke than hidden love.

Jó szándékúak a baráttól kapott sebek, de utálatos a gyűlölködő csókja.

Jószándékból valók a barátságos embertől vett sebek; és temérdek a gyűlölőnek csókja.

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

Rănile făcute de un prieten dovedesc credincioşia lui, dar sărutările unui vrăjmaş sunt mincinoase. –

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.

The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

Sătulul calcă în picioare fagurele de miere, dar pentru cel flămând toate amărăciunile sunt dulci. –

One who is full loathes honey, but to one who is hungry everything bitter is sweet.

Mint a madárka, amely elbujdosott fészkéből, olyan az az ember, aki elbujdosott lakóhelyéről.

As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.

Ca pasărea plecată din cuibul ei, aşa este omul plecat din locul său.

Like a bird that strays from its nest is a man who strays from his home.

Amint az olaj és jó illat megvidámítja a szívet, úgy a jóbarát kedves tanácsa is, mely lelkéből fakad.

[Mint] a kenet és jó illat megvídámítja a szívet: úgy az ő barátjának édes [szavai is, melyek] lelke tanácsából [valók.]

Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

Cum înveseleşte untdelemnul şi tămâia inima, aşa de dulci sunt sfaturile pline de dragoste ale unui prieten. –

Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel.

Barátodat és apád barátját ne hagyd el, és testvéred házába ne menj be nyomorúságod idején. Jobb a közeli szomszéd a távoli testvérnél.

A te barátodat, és a te atyádnak barátját el ne hagyd, és a te atyádfiának házába be ne menj nyomorúságodnak idején. Jobb a közel való szomszéd a messze való atyafinál.

Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

Nu părăsi pe prietenul tău şi pe prietenul tatălui tău, dar nu intra în casa fratelui tău în ziua necazului tău: mai bine un vecin aproape decât un frate departe. –

Do not forsake your friend and your father’s friend, and do not go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity. Better is a neighbor who is near than a brother who is far away.

Légy bölcs, fiam, és vidámítsd meg szívemet, hogy megfelelhessek annak, aki ócsárol engem!

Légy bölcs fiam, és vídámítsd meg az én szívemet; hogy megfelelhessek annak, a ki engem ócsárol.

My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me.

Fiule, fii înţelept şi înveseleşte-mi inima, şi atunci voi putea răspunde celui ce mă batjocoreşte. –

Be wise, my son, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him who reproaches me.

Az eszes meglátja a bajt, és elrejtőzik, az esztelenek nekimennek, és kudarcot vallanak.

Az eszes meglátja a bajt, elrejti magát; az esztelenek neki mennek, kárát vallják.

A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.

Omul chibzuit vede răul şi se ascunde; dar proştii merg spre el şi sunt pedepsiţi. –

The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.

Vedd el a ruháját annak, aki kezességet vállal másért; végy zálogot tőle az idegenért.

Vedd el a ruháját, mert kezes lett másért, és az idegenért zálogold meg.

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

Ia-i haina, căci s-a pus chezaş pentru altul, ia-l zălog în locul unei străine. –

Take a man’s garment when he has put up security for a stranger, and hold it in pledge when he puts up security for an adulteress.

Aki korán reggel nagy hangon áldja barátját, attól úgy veszik, mintha megátkozná.

A ki nagy hangon áldja az ő barátját, reggel jó idején felkelvén; átokul tulajdoníttatik néki.

He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.

Binecuvântarea aproapelui cu glas tare dis-de-dimineaţă este privită ca un blestem. –

Whoever blesses his neighbor with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, will be counted as cursing.

A sűrű záporeső idején való szüntelen csepegés és a házsártos asszony hasonló egymáshoz.

A sebes záporeső idején való szüntelen csepegés, és a morgó asszonyember hasonlók.

A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

O streaşină care picură necurmat într-o zi de ploaie, şi o nevastă gâlcevitoare sunt totuna.

A continual dripping on a rainy day and a quarrelsome wife are alike;

Aki föl akarja tartóztatni, szelet tartóztat föl, és jobbjával olajat fog meg.

Valaki el akarja azt rejteni, szelet rejt el, és az ő jobbja olajjal találkozik.

Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself.

Cine o opreşte, parcă opreşte vântul şi parcă ţine untdelemnul în mâna dreaptă. –

to restrain her is to restrain the wind or to grasp oil in one’s right hand.

Ahogy vassal élesítik a vasat, úgy élesíti egyik ember a másikat.

[Miképen] egyik vassal a másikat élesítik, [a képen] az ember élesíti az ő barátjának orczáját.

Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

După cum fierul ascute fierul, tot aşa şi omul aţâţă mânia altui om. –

Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.

Aki őrzi a fügét, eszik annak gyümölcséből, s aki urára figyel, azt tisztelik.

[Mint] a ki őrzi a fügét, eszik annak gyümölcséből, úgy a ki az ő urára vigyáz, tiszteltetik.

Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.

Cine îngrijeşte de un smochin va mânca din rodul lui, şi cine-şi păzeşte stăpânul va fi preţuit. –

Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who guards his master will be honored.

Ahogy a víz tükrözi az arcot, úgy tükrözi az ember szíve az embert.

Mint a vízben egyik orcza a másikat [megmutatja,] úgy egyik embernek szíve a másikat.

As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.

Cum răspunde în apă faţa la faţă, aşa răspunde inima omului inimii omului. –

As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man.

Ahogy a sír és a halál földje ki nem elégül, úgy az ember szeme sem elégedik meg.

[Mint] a sír és a pokol meg nem elégednek, [úgy] az embernek szemei meg nem elégednek.

Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

După cum Locuinţa morţilor şi adâncul nu se pot sătura, tot aşa nici ochii omului nu se pot sătura. –

Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied, and never satisfied are the eyes of man.

Ahogy az ezüstöt tégelyben és az aranyat kemencében próbálják meg, úgy az embert azzal, ha dicsérik.

[Mint] az ezüst a tégelyben, és az arany a kemenczében [próbáltatik meg, úgy] az ember az ő híre-neve szerint.

As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.

Ce este tigaia pentru lămurirea argintului şi cuptorul pentru lămurirea aurului: aceea este bunul nume pentru un om. –

The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and a man is tested by his praise.

Ha megtörnéd is a bolondot mozsárban mozsártörővel, mint az őrölt darát, nem távoznék el tőle bolondsága.

Ha megtörnéd is a bolondot mozsárban mozsártörővel a megtört gabona között, nem távoznék el ő tőle az ő bolondsága.

Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

Pe nebun chiar dacă l-ai pisa cu pisălogul în piuă, în mijlocul grăunţelor, nebunia tot n-ar ieşi din el. –

Crush a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with crushed grain, yet his folly will not depart from him.

Tartsd számon jól juhaid állapotát, gondolj a nyájakra.

Szorgalmasan megismerd a te juhaid külsejét, gondolj a nyájakra.

Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.

Îngrijeşte bine de oile tale şi ia seama la turmele tale.

Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds,

Mert nem örökkévaló a gazdagság, és vajon a korona nemzedékről nemzedékre öröklődik-e?

Mert nem örökkévaló a gazdagság, és vajjon a korona nemzetségről nemzetségre lesz-é?

For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?

Căci nicio bogăţie nu ţine veşnic şi nici cununa nu rămâne pe vecie. –

for riches do not last forever; and does a crown endure to all generations?

Amikor lekaszálják a füvet, és kihajt a sarjú, és begyűjtik a hegyekről a szénát,

[Mikor] levágatott a szénafű, és megtetszett a sarjú, és begyűjtettek a hegyekről a fűvek:

The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered.

După ce se ridică fânul, se arată verdeaţa nouă, şi ierburile de pe munţi sunt strânse. –

When the grass is gone and the new growth appears and the vegetation of the mountains is gathered,

akkor juhaidért ruhát és kecskéidért mezőt vehetsz,

Vannak juhaid a te ruházatodra, és kecskebakok mezőnek árául,

The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.

Mieii sunt pentru îmbrăcăminte, şi ţapii pentru plata ogorului;

the lambs will provide your clothing, and the goats the price of a field.

és lesz elég kecsketejed, hogy táplálkozhass te, házad népe és szolgálóleányaid.

És elég kecsketej a te ételedre, a te házadnépének ételére, és szolgálóleányaidnak ételül.

And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.

laptele caprelor ţi-ajunge pentru hrana ta, a casei tale, şi pentru întreţinerea slujnicelor tale.

There will be enough goats’ milk for your food, for the food of your household and maintenance for your girls.
