Mikor az uralkodóval ülsz le enni, szorgosan figyelj arra, mi van előtted.

Mikor leülsz enni az uralkodóval, szorgalmasan reá vigyázz, ki van előtted.

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

Dacă stai la masă la unul din cei mari, ia seama ce ai înainte:

When you sit down to eat with a ruler, observe carefully what is before you,

Kést tegyél a torkodra, ha mértéktelen vagy.

És kést tégy a torkodra, ha mértékletlen vagy.

And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

pune-ţi un cuţit în gât, dacă eşti prea lacom.

and put a knife to your throat if you are given to appetite.

Ne kívánd csemegéit, mert csalétek az.

Ne kivánd az ő csemegéit; mert ezek hazug étkek.

Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

Nu pofti mâncărurile lui alese, căci sunt o hrană înşelătoare.

Do not desire his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.

Ne fáradozz azon, hogy meggazdagodj, az ilyen megfontolástól állj el.

Ne fáraszd magadat ebben, hogy meggazdagulj; [ez ilyen testi] eszességedtől szünjél meg.

Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

Nu te chinui ca să te îmbogăţeşti, nu-ţi pune priceperea în aceasta.

Do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist.

Amint szemet vetsz rá, már el is tűnik előled, mert hirtelen olyan szárnya támad, mint a sasnak, és elrepül az ég felé!

Avagy a te szemeidet veted-é arra? holott az semmi, mert olyan szárnyakat szerez magának nagy hamar, mint a saskeselyű, és az ég felé elrepül!

Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

Abia ţi-ai aruncat ochii spre ea şi nu mai este; căci bogăţia îşi face aripi şi, ca vulturul, îşi ia zborul spre ceruri.

When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven.

Ne egyél az irigy tekintetű étkéből, és ne kívánd csemegéit!

Ne egyél az irígy szeműnek étkéből, és ne kivánd az ő csemegéit;

Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

Nu mânca pâinea celui pizmaş şi nu pofti mâncărurile lui alese,

Do not eat the bread of a man who is stingy; do not desire his delicacies,

Mert olyan ő, mint aki számolgatja magában a falatot: „Egyél és igyál!” – mondja neked, de még sincs jóakarattal hozzád.

Mert mint a ki számítgatja [a falatot] magában, olyan ő: egyél és igyál, azt mondja te néked; de azért nem jó akarattal van tehozzád.

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

căci el este ca unul care îşi face socotelile în suflet. „Mănâncă şi bea,” îţi va zice el; dar inima lui nu este cu tine.

for he is like one who is inwardly calculating. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

Falatodat, amelyet megettél, kihányod, és ékes beszédedet csak hiába vesztegeted.

A te falatodat, a melyet megettél, kihányod; és a te ékes beszédidet csak hiába vesztegeted.

The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

Bucata pe care ai mâncat-o, o vei vărsa, şi cuvintele plăcute pe care le vei spune, sunt pierdute.

You will vomit up the morsels that you have eaten, and waste your pleasant words.

A bolond füle hallatára ne beszélj, mert megveti szavaid bölcsességét.

A bolondnak hallására ne szólj; mert megútálja a te beszédidnek bölcseségét.

Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

Nu vorbi la urechea celui nebun, căci el nesocoteşte cuvintele tale înţelepte.

Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the good sense of your words.

Ne mozdítsd el a régi határt, és az árva mezejébe ne kapj bele,

Ne mozdítsd meg a régi határt, és az árváknak mezeibe ne kapj;

Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

Nu muta hotarul văduvei şi nu intra în ogorul orfanilor,

Do not move an ancient landmark or enter the fields of the fatherless,

mert megváltójuk erős: ő perli ügyüket veled!

Mert az ő megváltójuk erős, az forgatja az ő ügyöket ellened!

For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

căci răzbunătorul lor este puternic: El le va apăra pricina împotriva ta.

for their Redeemer is strong; he will plead their cause against you.

Add szívedet az erkölcsi tanításra és füledet a bölcs beszédekre.

Add a te elmédet az erkölcsi tanításra, és a te füleidet a bölcs beszédekre.

Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

Deschide-ţi inima la învăţătură, şi urechile la cuvintele ştiinţei.

Apply your heart to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge.

Ne vond meg a gyermektől a fenyítést: ha megvered vesszővel, nem hal bele.

Ne vond el a gyermektől a fenyítéket; ha megvered őt vesszővel, meg nem hal.

Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

Nu cruţa copilul de mustrare, căci dacă-l vei lovi cu nuiaua nu va muri.

Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die.

Mert megvered ugyan vesszővel, de lelkét kiragadod a Seolból.

Te vesszővel vered meg őt: és az ő lelkét a pokolból ragadod ki.

Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

Lovindu-l cu nuiaua, îi scoţi sufletul din Locuinţa morţilor.

If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.

Fiam, ha bölcs lesz a szíved, az én szívem is örül.

Szerelmes fiam, ha bölcs lesz a te elméd, örvendez a lelkem nékem is.

My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

Fiule, dacă-ţi va fi inima înţeleaptă, inima mea se va bucura,

My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad.

És vigadoznak veséim, ha ajkad igazat szól.

És vígadoznak az én veséim, a te ajkaidnak igazmondásán.

Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

şi lăuntrul meu se va înveseli, când buzele tale vor spune ce este bine.

My inmost being will exult when your lips speak what is right.

Ne irigykedjék szíved a bűnösökre, hanem az ÚR félelmében maradj meg mindennap.

Ne irígykedjék a te szíved a bűnösökre; hanem az Úr félelmében [légy] egész napon;

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

Să nu-ţi pizmuiască inima pe cei păcătoşi, ci să aibă totdeauna frică de Domnul;

Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the LORD all the day.

Mert biztosan van jövendő, és reménységed nem semmisül meg.

Mert [ennek] bizonyos vége van; a te várakozásod meg nem csalatkozik.

For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

căci este o răsplată, şi nu ţi se va tăia nădejdea.

Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.

Hallgass rám, fiam, légy bölcs, és őrizd meg szívedet ezen az úton.

Hallgass te, fiam, [engem,] hogy légy bölcs, és jártasd ez úton szívedet.

Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

Ascultă, fiule, şi fii înţelept; îndreaptă-ţi inima pe calea cea dreaptă.

Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your heart in the way.

Ne légy a bor mellett dőzsölők között, sem azok között, akik a húsevésben tobzódnak.

Ne légy azok közül való, a kik borral dőzsölnek; azok közül, a kik hússal dobzódnak.

Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

Nu fi printre cei ce beau vin, nici printre cei ce se îmbuibă cu carne.

Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat,

Mert a részeges és tobzódó elszegényedik, és rongyokba öltöztet a sok alvás.

Mert a részeges és dobzódó szegény lesz, és rongyokba öltöztet az aluvás.

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

Căci beţivul şi cel ce se dedă la îmbuibare sărăcesc, şi aţipirea te face să porţi zdrenţe.

for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags.

Hallgass apádra, aki téged nemzett, és ne vesd meg anyádat, mikor megöregszik.

Hallgasd a te atyádat, a ki nemzett téged; és meg ne útáld a te anyádat, mikor megvénhedik.

Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

Ascultă pe tatăl tău, care te-a născut, şi nu nesocoti pe mama ta, când a îmbătrânit.

Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

Szerezz igazságot, és el ne add; sem a bölcsességet, az erkölcsöt és értelmet.

Szerezz igazságot, és el ne adj; bölcseséget és erkölcsöt és eszességet.

Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

Cumpără adevărul şi nu-l vinde, înţelepciunea, învăţătura şi priceperea.

Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.

Igen örül az igaznak az apja, és aki bölcset nemzett, örvendezik neki.

Igen örül az igaznak atyja, és a bölcsnek szülője annak vígadoz.

The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

Tatăl celui neprihănit se înveseleşte, şi cel ce dă naştere unui înţelept se bucură.

The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.

Vigadjon apád és anyád, és örvendezzen, aki szült téged.

Vígadjon a te atyád és a te anyád, és örvendezzen a te szülőd.

Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

Să se bucure tatăl tău şi mama ta, să se înveselească cea care te-a născut.

Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice.

Add nekem, fiam, a szívedet, és tartsd szemed előtt útjaimat!

Adjad, fiam, a te szívedet nékem, és a te szemeid az én útaimat megőrizzék.

My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

Fiule, dă-mi inima ta şi să găsească plăcere ochii tăi în căile mele.

My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways.

Mert mély verem a parázna asszony, és szűk kút az idegen asszony.

Mert mély verem a tisztátalan asszony, és szoros kút az idegen asszony.

For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

Căci curva este o groapă adâncă, şi străina o fântână strâmtă.

For a prostitute is a deep pit; an adulteress is a narrow well.

Leselkedik, mint a tolvaj, és szaporítja az emberek közt a hitetleneket.

És az, mint a tolvaj leselkedik, és az emberek közt a hitetleneket szaporítja.

She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

Ea pândeşte ca un hoţ şi măreşte între oameni numărul celor stricaţi.

She lies in wait like a robber and increases the traitors among mankind.

Kinek jaj? Kinek baj? Ki veszekedik? Kinek van panasza? Ki kap ok nélkül sebeket? Kinek a szemei vörösek?

Kinek jaj? kinek oh jaj? kinek versengések? kinek panasz? kinek ok nélkül való sebek? kinek szemeknek veressége?

Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

Ale cui sunt vaietele? Ale cui sunt oftările? Ale cui sunt neînţelegerile? Ale cui sunt plângerile? Ale cui sunt rănirile fără pricină? Ai cui sunt ochii roşii?

Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?

Azoknak, akik borral mulatnak, akik a jó bor kóstolására igyekeznek.

A bornál mulatóknak, a kik mennek a jó bor kutatására.

They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

Ale celor ce întârzie la vin şi se duc să golească paharul cu vin amestecat.

Those who tarry long over wine; those who go to try mixed wine.

Ne nézd a bort, milyen vörös színt játszik, mint mutatja csillogását a pohárban, mert könnyen lecsúszik az,

Ne nézd a bort, mily veres színt játszik, mint mutatja a pohárban az ő csillogását; könnyen alá csuszamlik,

Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

Nu te uita la vin când curge roşu şi face mărgăritare în pahar; el alunecă uşor,

Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly.

és végül megmar, mint a kígyó, megcsíp, mint a mérges kígyó.

Végre, mint a kígyó, megmar, és mint a mérges kígyó, megcsíp.

At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

dar pe urmă ca un şarpe muşcă şi înţeapă ca un basilic.

In the end it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder.

Zavaros dolgokat lát majd szemed, és szíved bolondokat beszél.

A te szemeid nézik az idegen asszonyt, és a te elméd gondol gonoszságot.

Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

Ochii ţi se vor uita după femeile altora, şi inima îţi va vorbi prostii.

Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart utter perverse things.

Olyan leszel, mint aki a tenger közepén fekszik, és mint aki az árbocfa tetején van.

És olyan leszel, mint a ki fekszik a tenger közepiben, és a ki fekszik az árbóczfának tetején.

Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

Vei fi ca un om culcat în mijlocul mării, ca un om culcat pe vârful unui catarg.

You will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, like one who lies on the top of a mast.

Ütöttek, de nem fájt nekem, vertek, de nem éreztem! Amikor fölébredek, folytatom, újra csak ezt keresem.

Ütöttek engem, nékem nem fájt; vertek, nem éreztem! Mikor ébredek fel? Akkor folytatom, ismét megkeresem azt.

They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

„M-a lovit… dar nu mă doare!… M-a bătut… dar nu simt nimic! Când mă voi trezi? Mai vreau vin!”

“They struck me,” you will say, “but I was not hurt; they beat me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake? I must have another drink.”
