Isten dicsősége az, hogy a dolgokat elrejti, a királyok tisztessége pedig, hogy a dolgokat kikutatják.

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.

Slava lui Dumnezeu stă în ascunderea lucrurilor, dar slava împăraţilor stă în cercetarea lucrurilor. –

It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.

The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.

Ne dicsekedj a király előtt, és ne állj a nagyok helyére.

Ne dicsekedjél a király előtt, és a nagyok helyére ne állj;

Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:

Nu te făli înaintea împăratului şi nu lua locul celor mari;

Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence or stand in the place of the great,

Mert jobb, ha azt mondják neked: „Jöjj, kerülj följebb!”, mint ha megaláznak egy előkelőbb előtt.

Mert jobb, ha [azt] mondják néked: jer ide fel; hogynem mint levettetned néked a tisztességes előtt, a kit láttak a te szemeid.

For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.

căci este mai bine să ţi se zică: „Suie-te mai sus!” decât să fii coborât înaintea voievodului pe care ţi-l văd ochii. –

for it is better to be told, “Come up here,” than to be put lower in the presence of a noble. What your eyes have seen

Amit megláttál, ne vidd hirtelen perre, hogy végül ne kelljen kérdezned, mit is cselekedjél, ha megszégyenít felebarátod.

Ne indulj fel a versengésre hirtelen, hogy [azt] ne [kelljen kérdened,] mit cselekedjél az után, mikor gyalázattal illet téged a te felebarátod.

Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.

Nu te grăbi să te iei la ceartă, ca nu cumva la urmă să nu ştii ce să faci, când te va lua la ocări aproapele tău. –

do not hastily bring into court, for what will you do in the end, when your neighbor puts you to shame?

Peres ügyedet intézd el felebarátoddal, de másnak a titkát ne fedd föl,

A te ügyedet végezd el felebarátoddal; de másnak titkát meg ne jelentsd;

Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another:

Apără-ţi pricina împotriva aproapelui tău, dar nu da pe faţă taina altuia,

Argue your case with your neighbor himself, and do not reveal another’s secret,

hogy ne gyalázzon téged, aki hallja, mert akkor rágalmadat nem vonhatod vissza.

Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.

ca nu cumva, aflând-o cineva, să te umple de ruşine şi să-ţi iasă nume rău care să nu se mai şteargă.

lest he who hears you bring shame upon you, and your ill repute have no end.

Mint az aranyfüggő és a színarany ékszer, olyan a bölcs intés a szófogadó fülnek.

As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

Ca o verigă de aur şi o podoabă de aur curat, aşa este înţeleptul care mustră, pentru o ureche ascultătoare. –

Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear.

Mint a havas hideg aratás idején, olyan a hű követ azoknak, akik elküldték, mert megvidámítja urai lelkét.

As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.

Ca răcoarea zăpezii pe vremea secerişului, aşa este un sol credincios pentru cel ce-l trimite: el înviorează sufletul stăpânului său.

Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest is a faithful messenger to those who send him; he refreshes the soul of his masters.

Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.

Ca norii şi vântul fără ploaie, aşa este un om care se laudă pe nedrept cu dărniciile lui. –

Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of a gift he does not give.

Türelemmel a fejedelmet is ki lehet engesztelni, és a szelíd beszéd megtöri a csontot.

Tűrés által engeszteltetik meg a fejedelem, és a szelíd beszéd megtöri a csontot.

By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

Prin răbdare se înduplecă un voievod, şi o limbă dulce poate zdrobi oase.

With patience a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.

Ha mézet találsz, egyél, amennyi jólesik, de sokat ne egyél, nehogy kihányd.

Ha mézet találsz, egyél a mennyi elég néked; de sokat ne egyél, hogy ki ne hányd azt.

Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

Dacă dai peste miere, nu mânca decât atât cât îţi ajunge, ca să nu ţi se scârbească şi s-o verşi din gură. –

If you have found honey, eat only enough for you, lest you have your fill of it and vomit it.

Ritkán tedd lábadat felebarátod házába, hogy torkig ne legyen veled, és meg ne gyűlöljön.

Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee.

Calcă rar în casa aproapelui tău, ca să nu se sature de tine şi să te urască. –

Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor’s house, lest he have his fill of you and hate you.

A man who bears false witness against his neighbor is like a war club, or a sword, or a sharp arrow.

Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.

Ca un dinte stricat şi ca un picior care şchiopătă, aşa este încrederea într-un stricat la ziua necazului.

Trusting in a treacherous man in time of trouble is like a bad tooth or a foot that slips.

Mint aki leveti ruháját hideg időben, és mint az ecet lúggal keverve, olyan, aki dalol a bánatos szívű ember előtt.

As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart.

Ca unul care îşi scoate haina pe o zi rece, sau varsă oţet pe silitră, aşa este cine cântă cântece unei inimi în nenorocire. –

Whoever sings songs to a heavy heart is like one who takes off a garment on a cold day, and like vinegar on soda.

If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

Dacă este flămând vrăjmaşul tău, dă-i pâine să mănânce, dacă-i este sete, dă-i apă să bea.

If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink,

For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.

Căci, făcând aşa, aduni cărbuni aprinşi pe capul lui, şi Domnul îţi va răsplăti. –

for you will heap burning coals on his head, and the LORD will reward you.

The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.

It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.

It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.

As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.

Mint a fölkavart forrás és a megromlott kút, olyan az igaz, aki meginog a gonosz előtt.

[Mint a] megháborított forrás és megromlott kútfő, [olyan ]az igaz, a ki a gonosz előtt ingadozik.

A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring.

Ca o fântână tulbure şi ca un izvor stricat, aşa este cel neprihănit care se clatină înaintea celui rău. –

Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.

Túl sok mézet enni nem jó, a magunk dicsőségét keresni sem dicsőség.

Igen sok mézet enni nem jó; hát a magunk dicsőségét keresni dicsőség?

It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory.

Nu este bine să mănânci multă miere: tot aşa, nu este o cinste să alergi după slava ta însuţi. –

It is not good to eat much honey, nor is it glorious to seek one’s own glory.

Mint a romos és bekerítetlen város, olyan az az ember, akinek nincsen önuralma.

[Mint] a megromlott és kerítés nélkül való város, [olyan ]a férfi, a kinek nincsen birodalma az ő lelkén!

He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

Omul care nu este stăpân pe sine este ca o cetate surpată şi fără ziduri.

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
