Felette nagy hiábavalóság – ezt mondja a prédikátor –, felette nagy hiábavalóság! Minden hiábavalóság!

Felette nagy hiábavalóság, azt mondja a prédikátor; felette nagy hiábavalóság! Minden hiábavalóság!

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

O, deşertăciune a deşertăciunilor, zice Eclesiastul, o, deşertăciune a deşertăciunilor! Totul este deşertăciune.

Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.

Mi haszna van az embernek minden munkájában, amelyet végez a nap alatt?

Micsoda haszna van az embernek minden ő munkájában, melylyel munkálkodik a nap alatt?

What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

Ce folos are omul din toată truda pe care şi-o dă sub soare?

What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun?

Egyik nemzedék megy, és követi a másik, de a föld mindörökké megmarad.

Egyik nemzetség elmegy, és a másik eljő; a föld pedig mindörökké megmarad.

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

Un neam trece, altul vine, şi pământul rămâne veşnic în picioare.

A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever.

Fölkel a nap, és lenyugszik, a helyére siet, ahonnan majd ismét fölkel.

És a nap feltámad, és elnyugszik a nap; és az ő helyére siet, a hol ő [ismét] feltámad.

The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

Soarele răsare, apune şi aleargă spre locul de unde răsare din nou.

The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises.

A szél délnek siet, majd északra fordul. Körbe-körbejár, és a maga keringéséhez visszatér a szél.

Siet délre, és átmegy észak felé; körbe-körbe siet a szél, és a maga keringéséhez visszatér a szél.

The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

Vântul suflă spre miazăzi şi se întoarce spre miazănoapte; apoi iarăşi se întoarce şi începe din nou aceleaşi rotiri.

The wind blows to the south and goes around to the north; around and around goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns.

Minden folyó a tengerbe siet, de a tenger mégsem telik meg. Bárhova sietnek is a folyók, ugyanarra a helyre térnek vissza.

Minden folyóvíz siet a tengerbe; mindazáltal a tenger mégis meg nem telik: akármicsoda helyre a folyóvizek siessenek, ugyanazon helyre térnek vissza.

All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

Toate râurile se varsă în mare, şi marea tot nu se umple: ele aleargă necurmat spre locul de unde pornesc, ca iarăşi să pornească de acolo.

All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they flow again.

Minden dolog fáradozással jár, föl sem tudja sorolni az ember. Nem telik be a szem a látással, sem a fül a hallással.

Minden dolgok [mint] fáradoznak, senki ki nem mondhatja; nem elégednék meg a szem látván, sem be nem teljesednék hallásával a fül.

All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

Toate lucrurile sunt într-o necurmată frământare, aşa cum nu se poate spune; ochiul nu se mai satură privind, şi urechea nu oboseşte auzind.

All things are full of weariness; a man cannot utter it; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

Ami volt, ugyanaz lesz ezután is, és ami történt, ugyanaz történik majd ezután is. Semmi új nincs a nap alatt.

A mi volt, ugyanaz, a mi ezután is lesz, és a mi történt, ugyanaz, a mi ezután is történik; és semmi nincs új dolog a nap alatt.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

Ce a fost va mai fi, şi ce s-a făcut se va mai face; nu este nimic nou sub soare.

What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.

Van, amiről azt mondják: „Nézd, ez új dolog”, pedig már rég megvolt előttünk, ősidők óta.

Van valami, a miről mondják: nézd ezt, új ez; régen volt már száz esztendőkön át, melyek mi előttünk voltak.

Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

Dacă este vreun lucru despre care s-ar putea spune: „Iată ceva nou!”, demult lucrul acela era şi în veacurile dinaintea noastră.

Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us.

Nem emlékszünk a korábbiakra, ugyanúgy nem fognak emlékezni a most még eljövendő dolgokra azok sem, akik utánunk jönnek.

Nincs emlékezet az előbbiekről; azonképen az utolsó dolgokról is, melyek jövendők, nem lesz emlékezet azoknál, a kik azután lesznek.

There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

Nimeni nu-şi mai aduce aminte de ce a fost mai înainte; şi ce va mai fi, ce se va întâmpla mai pe urmă, nu va lăsa nicio urmă de aducere aminte la cei ce vor trăi mai târziu.

There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after.

I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

Eu, Eclesiastul, am fost împărat peste Israel, în Ierusalim.

I the Preacher have been king over Israel in Jerusalem.

Arra adtam elmémet, hogy bölcsességgel kutassam és vizsgáljam mindazt, ami az ég alatt történik. Gonosz és hiábavaló foglalatosság ez, melyet azért adott Isten az emberek fiainak, hogy gyötrődjenek vele.

És adám az én elmémet mindazok vizsgálására és bölcsen való tudakozására, melyek lesznek az ég alatt. Ez gonosz hiábavaló foglalatosság, melyet adott Isten az emberek fiainak, hogy gyötrődjenek vele.

And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

Mi-am pus inima să cercetez şi să adâncesc cu înţelepciune tot ce se întâmplă sub ceruri: iată o îndeletnicire plină de trudă la care supune Dumnezeu pe fiii oamenilor.

And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with.

Láttam minden dolgot, ami történik a nap alatt, és íme, minden csak hiábavalóság és szélkergetés!

Láttam minden dolgokat, melyek lesznek a nap alatt, és ímé minden csak hiábavalóság, és a léleknek gyötrelme!

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Am văzut tot ce se face sub soare; şi iată că totul este deşertăciune şi goană după vânt!

I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.

A görbe nem egyenesíthető ki, és ami hiányzik, az nem számlálható meg.

Az egyenetlen meg nem egyenesíthető, és a fogyatkozás meg nem számlálható.

That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

Ce este strâmb nu se poate îndrepta, şi ce lipseşte nu poate fi trecut la număr.

What is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking cannot be counted.

Így szóltam magamban: íme, nagyobbá lettem, és több bölcsességet szereztem, mint azok, akik előttem uralkodtak Jeruzsálemben, és elmém sok bölcsességet és tudományt látott.

Szóltam az én elmémmel, mondván: ímé, én nagygyá lettem, és gyűjtöttem bölcseséget mindazok felett, a kik fők voltak én előttem Jeruzsálemben, és az én elmém bőven látott bölcseséget és tudományt!

I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

Am zis în mine însumi: „Iată că am sporit şi am întrecut în înţelepciune pe toţi cei ce au stăpânit înaintea mea peste Ierusalim, şi mintea mea a văzut multă înţelepciune şi ştiinţă.

I said in my heart, “I have acquired great wisdom, surpassing all who were over Jerusalem before me, and my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”

De amikor arra adtam elmémet, hogy megismerjem a bölcsességet, és megismerjem az esztelenséget és a bolondságot, rájöttem, hogy ez is csak szélkergetés.

Adtam annakfelette az én elmémet a bölcseségnek tudására, és az esztelenségnek és bolondságnak megtudására. Megtudtam, hogy ez is a lélek gyötrelme.

And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

Mi-am pus inima să cunosc înţelepciunea şi să cunosc prostia şi nebunia. Dar am înţeles că şi aceasta este goană după vânt.

And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind.

For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

Căci unde este multă înţelepciune este şi mult necaz, şi cine ştie multe are şi multă durere.
