Van egy gonosz dolog, amelyet láttam a nap alatt, és nagy baja az az embernek:

Van egy gonosz, a melyet láttam a nap alatt, és nagy [baj] az az emberen;

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:

Este un rău pe care l-am văzut sub soare şi care se întâlneşte des între oameni.

There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it lies heavy on mankind:

mikor valakinek Isten gazdagságot, kincseket és tekintélyt ad, és semmiben sem szűkölködik, amit csak megkíván a lelke, de Isten nem engedi neki, hogy éljen vele, hanem más ember élvezi: ez hiábavalóság, és szörnyű dolog.

Mikor valakinek az Isten ád gazdagságot és kincseket és tisztességet, és semmi nélkül nem szűkölködik, valamit kivánhat lelkének, és az Isten nem engedi néki, hogy éljen azzal, hanem más ember él azzal: ez hiábavalóság és gonosz nyavalya!

A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.

Este, de pildă, un om căruia i-a dat Dumnezeu avere, bogăţii şi slavă, aşa că nu-i lipseşte nimic din ce-i doreşte sufletul, dar Dumnezeu nu-l lasă să se bucure de ele, ci un străin se bucură de ele: aceasta este o deşertăciune şi un rău mare.

a man to whom God gives wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God does not give him power to enjoy them, but a stranger enjoys them. This is vanity; it is a grievous evil.

Ha száz gyermeke születik is valakinek, és sok évig él, magas kort ér meg, de lelke nem elégszik meg javaival, és méltó temetése sem lesz: azt mondom, hogy jobb az elvetélt gyermeknek, mint neki.

Ha száz gyermeket szül is valaki, és sok esztendeig él, úgy hogy az ő esztendeinek napja sok, de az ő lelke a jóval meg nem elégszik, és nem lesz temetése néki: azt mondom, hogy jobb annál az idétlen gyermek,

If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

Chiar dacă un om ar avea o sută de copii şi ar trăi mulţi ani – oricât de mult i s-ar mări numărul zilelor anilor lui – dar, dacă nu i se satură sufletul de bunătăţile agonisite de el şi dacă nici de înmormântare n-are parte, eu zic că o stârpitură este mai fericită decât el.

If a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not satisfied with life’s good things, and he also has no burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he.

Mert bár az hiábavalóságra jött, sötétségben megy el, és nevét sötétség fedi be,

Mert hiábavalóságra jött, setétségben megy el, és setétséggel fedeztetik be neve,

For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.

Căci aceasta din urmă piere odată cu venirea ei, se duce în întuneric, şi numele îi rămâne acoperit cu întuneric;

For it comes in vanity and goes in darkness, and in darkness its name is covered.

a napot sem látta, és nem ismerte meg, milyen, mégis tűrhetőbb az állapota, mint a másiké.

A napot sem látta és nem ismerte; tűrhetőbb ennek állapotja, hogynem amannak.

Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.

n-a văzut, nici n-a cunoscut soarele; şi de aceea este mai bine de ea decât de omul acela.

Moreover, it has not seen the sun or known anything, yet it finds rest rather than he.

Ha kétezer évet élt volna is anélkül, hogy a jót élvezte volna, hát nem ugyanarra a helyre jut mindenki?

Hogyha kétezer esztendőt élt volna is, és a jóval nem élt: avagy nem ugyanazon egy helyre megy-é minden?

Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?

Şi de ar trăi chiar de două ori o mie de ani un astfel de om, fără să se bucure de fericire, nu merg toate la un loc?

Even though he should live a thousand years twice over, yet enjoy no good—do not all go to the one place?

Az ember minden fáradozása a szájáért van, de kívánsága nem teljesül.

Az embernek minden munkája szájáért van; mindazáltal az ő kívánsága be nem telik.

All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

Toată truda omului este pentru gura lui, şi totuşi poftele nu i se împlinesc niciodată.

All the toil of man is for his mouth, yet his appetite is not satisfied.

Mert mi az előnye a bölcsnek a bolonddal szemben és a szegénynek, aki jól tud forgolódni az élők előtt?

Mert miben különbözik a bölcs a bolondtól, és miben a szegény, a ki az élők előtt járni tud?

For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?

Căci ce are înţeleptul mai mult decât nebunul? Ce folos are nenorocitul care ştie să se poarte înaintea celor vii?

For what advantage has the wise man over the fool? And what does the poor man have who knows how to conduct himself before the living?

Jobb az, amit az ember szeme lát, mint ami után csak kívánkozik. Ez is hiábavalóság és szélkergetés.

Jobb, a mit ember szemmel lát, hogynem a lélek kivánsága; ez is hiábavalóság és a léleknek gyötrelme!

Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

Mai bine ce vezi cu ochii decât frământare de pofte neîmplinite: şi aceasta este o deşertăciune şi goană după vânt.

Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the appetite: this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Régóta megvan a neve mindannak, ami létezik. Elrendelt dolog, hogy mi lesz az emberből, és nem szállhat perbe azzal, aki hatalmasabb nála.

Valami van, régen ráadatott nevezete, és bizonyos dolog, hogy mi lesz az ember, és nem perlekedhetik azzal, a ki hatalmasb nálánál.

That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.

Ce este omul se cunoaşte după numele care i s-a dat demult: se ştie că este din pământ, şi nu poate să se judece cu Cel ce este mai tare decât el.

Whatever has come to be has already been named, and it is known what man is, and that he is not able to dispute with one stronger than he.

Mert sok beszéd van, ami csupán a hiábavalóságot szaporítja, és mi haszna van belőle az embernek?

Mert van sok beszéd, a mely a hiábavalóságot szaporítja; és mi haszna van az embernek [abban?]

Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?

Căci, chiar dacă face multă vorbă, care doar înmulţeşte deşertăciunea, ce folos are omul din ea?

The more words, the more vanity, and what is the advantage to man?

Mert ki tudja, mi jó az embernek az életben, hiábavaló életének néhány napján, amelyeket úgy tölt el, mint egy árnyék? Ki adja tudtul az embernek, mi következik utána a nap alatt?

Mert kicsoda tudhatja, mi legyen az embernek jó e világon, az ő hiábavaló élete napjainak száma szerint, a melyeket mintegy árnyékot tölt el? Kicsoda az, a ki megmondhatná az embernek, mi következik ő utána a nap alatt?

For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

Căci cine ştie ce este bine pentru om în viaţă, în toate zilele vieţii lui de vieţuire deşartă, pe care le petrece ca o umbră? Şi cine poate să spună omului ce va fi după el sub soare?

For who knows what is good for man while he lives the few days of his vain life, which he passes like a shadow? For who can tell man what will be after him under the sun?
