It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

A bölcsek szíve a gyászolók házánál van, a bolondok szíve pedig a vigadozók házánál.

A bölcseknek elméje a siralmas házban [van], a bolondoknak pedig elméje a vígasságnak házában.

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.

Căci râsul celor fără minte este ca pârâitul spinilor sub căldare. Şi aceasta este o deşertăciune.

Az elnyomás megbolondítja a bölcs embert is, és a szívet megrontja az ajándék.

Mert a zsarolás megbolondítja a bölcs [embert] is, és az elmét elveszti az ajándék.

Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.

Averea luată prin silă înnebuneşte pe cel înţelept, şi mita strică inima.

Surely oppression drives the wise into madness, and a bribe corrupts the heart.

Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

Ne lobbanjon lelked hirtelen haragra, mert a harag a bolondok keblén nyugszik.

Ne légy hirtelen a lelkedben a haragra; mert a harag a bolondok kebelében nyugszik.

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

Nu te grăbi să te mânii în sufletul tău, căci mânia locuieşte în sânul nebunilor.

Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools.

Ne mondd ezt: Mi az oka annak, hogy a régi napok jobbak voltak, mint ezek? Nem vall bölcsességre az ilyen kérdés.

Ne mondd ezt: mi az oka, hogy a régi napok jobbak voltak ezeknél? mert nem bölcseségből származik az ilyen kérdés.

Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.

Nu zice: „Cum se face că zilele de mai înainte erau mai bune decât acestea?”, căci nu din înţelepciune întrebi aşa.

Say not, “Why were the former days better than these?” For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.

A bölcsesség oly jó, mint egy örökség, és hasznára van azoknak, akik látják a napot.

Jó a bölcseség az örökséggel, és előmenetelökre van az [embereknek], a kik a napot látják.

Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.

Înţelepciunea preţuieşte cât o moştenire, şi chiar mai mult, pentru cei ce văd soarele.

Wisdom is good with an inheritance, an advantage to those who see the sun.

Mert oltalom a bölcsesség és a gazdagság is, de az ismeret hasznosabb, mert a bölcsesség megőrzi az életét azoknak, akik azt birtokolják.

Mert a bölcseségnek árnyéka alatt, [és] a gazdagságnak árnyéka alatt [egyformán nyugszik az ember!] de a tudomány hasznosb, mivelhogy a bölcseség életet ád az ő urainak.

For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.

Căci ocrotire dă şi înţelepciunea, ocrotire dă şi argintul; dar un folos mai mult al ştiinţei este că înţelepciunea ţine în viaţă pe cei ce o au.

For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.

Nézd meg Isten cselekedeteit: ki teheti egyenessé, amit ő görbévé tett?

Tekintsd meg az Istennek cselekedetit; mert kicsoda teheti egyenessé, a mit ő görbévé tett?

Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?

Uită-te cu băgare de seamă la lucrarea lui Dumnezeu: cine poate să îndrepte ce a făcut El strâmb?

Consider the work of God: who can make straight what he has made crooked?

A jó napokban élj a jóval, a rossz napokban pedig jusson eszedbe, hogy ezt is, éppúgy, mint azt, Isten szerezte; azért az ember semmit se sejt abból, ami rá következik.

A jó szerencsének idején élj a jóval; a gonosz szerencsének idején pedig jusson eszedbe, hogy ezt is, épen úgy, mint azt, Isten szerzette, a végre, hogy az ember semmit [abból] eszébe ne vegyen, [a mi] reá következik.

In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.

În ziua fericirii, fii fericit, şi în ziua nenorocirii, gândeşte-te că Dumnezeu a făcut şi pe una şi pe cealaltă, pentru ca omul să nu mai poată şti nimic din ce va fi după el.

In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that man may not find out anything that will be after him.

Sok mindent láttam hiábavaló életemben: van olyan igaz ember, aki elvész, bár igaz, és van istentelen ember, aki hosszú életet él gonoszsága ellenére.

Mindent láttam az én hiábavalóságomnak napjain: van oly igaz, a ki az ő igazságában elvész; és van gonosz ember, a ki [az ő életének napjait] meghosszabbítja az ő gonoszságában.

All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.

Tot felul de lucruri am văzut în zilele deşertăciunii mele. Este câte un om fără prihană care piere în neprihănirea lui, şi este câte un nelegiuit care o duce mult în răutatea lui.

In my vain life I have seen everything. There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his evildoing.

Ne légy fölöttébb igaz, és túlságosan ne bölcselkedjél. Miért keresnél magadnak veszedelmet?

Ne légy felettébb igaz, és felettébb ne bölcselkedjél; miért keresnél magadnak veszedelmet?

Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself ?

Nu fi prea neprihănit şi nu te arăta prea înţelept: pentru ce să te pierzi singur?

Be not overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself?

Ne légy fölöttébb gonosz, és ne légy balgatag. Miért halnál meg idő előtt?

Ne légy felettébb gonosz, és ne légy balgatag; miért halnál meg időd előtt?

Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

Dar nu fi nici peste măsură de rău şi nu fi fără minte: pentru ce vrei să mori înainte de vreme?

Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. Why should you die before your time?

Jó, ha egy dolgot megragadsz, de nem engeded el a másikat sem, mert aki Istent féli, mindent véghezvisz.

Jobb, hogy ezt megfogd, és amattól is a te kezedet meg ne vond; mert a ki az Istent féli, mind ezektől megszabadul!

It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.

Bine este să ţii la aceasta, dar nici pe cealaltă să n-o laşi din mână; căci cine se teme de Dumnezeu scapă din toate acestea.

It is good that you should take hold of this, and from that withhold not your hand, for the one who fears God shall come out from both of them.

A bölcsesség jobban megerősíti a bölcset, mint tíz hatalmas a városban.

A bölcseség megerősíti a bölcset inkább, mint tíz hatalmas, a kik a városban vannak.

Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.

Înţelepciunea face pe cel înţelept mai tare decât zece viteji care sunt într-o cetate.

Wisdom gives strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.

Mert nincs egy igaz ember sem e földön, aki csak jót cselekedne, és ne vétkezne.

Mert nincs egy igaz ember is a földön, a ki jót cselekednék és nem vétkeznék.

For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

Fiindcă pe pământ nu este niciun om fără prihană, care să facă binele fără să păcătuiască.

Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.

Ne figyelj minden beszédre, hogy meg ne halld szolgádat, ha átkoz téged.

Ne figyelmezz minden beszédre, melyet mondanak, hogy meg ne halld szolgádat, hogy átkoz téged.

Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:

Nu lua nici tu seama la toate vorbele care se spun, ca nu cumva s-auzi pe sluga ta vorbindu-te de rău!

Do not take to heart all the things that people say, lest you hear your servant cursing you.

Mert lelked tudja, hogy sok esetben te átkoztál másokat.

Mert sok esetben tudja a te lelked is, hogy te is gonoszt mondottál egyebeknek.

For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

Căci ştie inima ta de câte ori ai vorbit şi tu de rău pe alţii.

Your heart knows that many times you yourself have cursed others.

Mindezt megpróbáltam bölcsesség által, mikor azt mondtam, hogy bölcs vagyok, de a bölcsesség mégis távol volt tőlem.

Mind ezeket megpróbáltam az én bölcseségem által. [Mikor] azt gondolám, [hogy] bölcs vagyok, én tőlem a [bölcseség] távol vala.

All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

Toate acestea le-am cercetat cu înţelepciune. Am zis: „Mă voi înţelepţi.” Dar înţelepciunea a rămas departe de mine.

All this I have tested by wisdom. I said, “I will be wise,” but it was far from me.

Nagyon messze van, ami van, és igen mélyen. Ki tudja megtalálni?

Felette igen messze van, a mi van, és felette mélységes; kicsoda tudhatja meg azt?

That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?

Cu mult mai departe decât era mai înainte, şi ce adâncă! Cine o va putea găsi?

That which has been is far off, and deep, very deep; who can find it out?

Figyelmemet arra fordítottam, hogy a bölcsességet és a dolgok magyarázatát megismerjem, kutassam és keressem, és hogy megismerjem a bolondság gonoszságát és a tévelygés balgaságát.

Fordítám én magamat és az én szívemet a bölcseségnek és az okoskodásnak tudására, kutatására és keresésére; azonképen hogy megtudjam a bolondságnak gonoszságát, és a tévelygésnek balgatagságát.

I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:

M-am apucat şi am cercetat toate lucrurile, cu gând să înţeleg, să adâncesc şi să caut înţelepciunea şi rostul lucrurilor, şi să pricep nebunia răutăţii şi rătăcirea prostiei.

I turned my heart to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know the wickedness of folly and the foolishness that is madness.

És a halálnál is keservesebbnek találtam az olyan asszonyt, akinek szíve olyan, mint a tőr és a csapda, kezei pedig olyanok, mint a bilincsek. Aki Isten előtt kedves, megmenekül tőle, a bűnöst azonban rabul ejti.

És találtam [egy dolgot,] mely keservesb a halálnál; tudniillik az olyan asszonyt, a kinek a szíve olyan, mint a tőr és a háló, kezei pedig olyanok, mint a kötelek. A ki Isten előtt kedves, megszabadul attól; a bűnös pedig megfogattatik attól.

And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

Şi am găsit că mai amară decât moartea este femeia a cărei inimă este o cursă şi un laţ şi ale cărei mâini sunt nişte lanţuri; cel plăcut lui Dumnezeu scapă de ea, dar cel păcătos este prins de ea.

And I find something more bitter than death: the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and whose hands are fetters. He who pleases God escapes her, but the sinner is taken by her.

Lásd, erre jutottam – mondja a prédikátor –, mikor gyakran és nagy szorgalommal kerestem a dolgok magyarázatát,

Lásd, ezt találtam, azt mondja a prédikátor; mikor gyakorta nagy szorgalmassággal keresém a megfejtést,

Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:

Iată ce am găsit, zice Eclesiastul, cercetând lucrurile unul câte unul ca să le pătrund rostul;

Behold, this is what I found, says the Preacher, while adding one thing to another to find the scheme of things—

amelyet lelkem folyton keres, de nem talál. Ezer közül egy igaz embert találtam, de asszonyt nem találtam közöttük.

A mit az én lelkem folyton keresett, és nem találtam. Ezer közül egy embert találtam; de asszonyt mind ezekben nem találtam.

Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

iată ce-mi caută şi acum sufletul, şi n-am găsit. Din o mie am găsit un om: dar o femeie n-am găsit în toate acestea.

which my soul has sought repeatedly, but I have not found. One man among a thousand I found, but a woman among all these I have not found.

Íme, csupán azt találtam, hogy Isten az embereket egyenes lelkűnek teremtette, ők pedig sok elképzeléssel próbálkoznak.

Hanem lásd, ezt találtam, hogy az Isten teremtette az embert igaznak; ők pedig kerestek sok kigondolást.

Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

Numai iată ce am găsit: că Dumnezeu a făcut pe oameni fără prihană, dar ei umblă cu multe şiretenii.

See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes.
