Azután szívemet a bölcsesség megismerésére adtam, hogy megvizsgáljak minden foglalatosságot, amely e földön történik úgy, hogy az ember szeme se éjjel, se nappal nem lát álmot.

Mikor adám az én szívemet a bölcseségnek megtudására, és hogy megvizsgáljak [minden] fáradságot, a mely e földön történik, (mert sem éjjel, sem nappal [az emberek] szeme álmot nem lát):

For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.

Da, mi-am pus inima în căutarea tuturor acestor lucruri, am cercetat toate aceste lucruri şi am văzut că cei neprihăniţi şi înţelepţi, şi faptele lor sunt în mâna lui Dumnezeu, atât dragostea, cât şi ura. Oamenii nu ştiu nimic mai dinainte; totul este înaintea lor în viitor.

But all this I laid to heart, examining it all, how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God. Whether it is love or hate, man does not know; both are before him.

Akkor megértettem Isten szándékát, hogy az ember soha nem járhat végére azoknak a dolgoknak, amelyek a nap alatt történnek. Mert fáradozik ugyan az ember, hogy kikutassa, de nem járhat a végére. Sőt ha azt mondja is a bölcs ember, hogy tudja, nem járhat a végére.

Akkor eszembe vevém az Istennek minden dolgát, hogy az ember nem mehet végére a dolognak, a mely a nap alatt történik; mert fáradozik az ember, hogy annak végére menjen, de nem mehet végére: sőt ha azt mondja is a bölcs ember, hogy tudja, nem mehet végére.

All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

Tuturor li se întâmplă toate deopotrivă: aceeaşi soartă are cel neprihănit şi cel rău, cel bun şi curat ca şi cel necurat, cel ce aduce jertfă ca şi cel ce n-aduce jertfă; cel bun ca şi cel păcătos, cel ce jură ca şi cel ce se teme să jure!

It is the same for all, since the same event happens to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As the good one is, so is the sinner, and he who swears is as he who shuns an oath.

Mindezt megfontoltam a szívemben, és megértettem, hogy az igazak és a bölcsek és minden cselekedetük is Isten kezében van. Szeretet is, gyűlölet is következhet, de nem tudják az emberek, mi vár rájuk.

Mert mindezt szívemre vettem, és pedig azért, hogy megvizsgáljam mindezt: hogy az igazak és bölcsek és azoknak minden cselekedetei Isten kezében vannak; szeretet is, gyűlölet is, nem tudják az emberek, mind ez előttük van.

This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

Iată cel mai mare rău în tot ce se face sub soare: anume că aceeaşi soartă au toţi. De aceea şi este plină inima oamenilor de răutate şi de aceea este atâta nebunie în inima lor tot timpul cât trăiesc. Şi după aceea? Se duc la cei morţi.

This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that the same event happens to all. Also, the hearts of the children of man are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

Minden megeshet mindenkivel: ugyanaz eshet meg az igazzal és a gonosszal, a jóval, a tisztával vagy a tisztátalannal, azzal, aki áldozik, és azzal is, aki nem áldozik, a jóval és a bűnössel egyaránt, azzal, aki esküszik, és azzal is, aki fél esküdni.

Minden olyan, hogy mindenkit [érhet], egyazon szerencséje van az igaznak és gonosznak, jónak vagy tisztának és tisztátalannak, mind annak, a ki áldozik, mind a ki nem áldozik, úgy a jónak, mint a bűnösnek, az esküvőnek úgy, mint a ki féli az esküvést.

For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

Căci cine este scutit? Oricine trăieşte tot mai trage nădejde; căci un câine viu face mai mult decât un leu mort.

But he who is joined with all the living has hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

Az ég alatt való minden dologgal az a baj, hogy mindenkit ugyanaz érhet. Az emberek fiainak szíve tele van gonoszsággal, és amíg élnek, szívükben mindenféle bolondság lakik, végül pedig a halottak közé jutnak.

Mind az ég alatt való dolgokban e gonosz van, hogy mindeneknek egyenlő szerencséjök van; és az emberek fiainak szíve is teljes gonoszsággal, és elméjökben minden bolondság van, a míg élnek, azután pedig a halottak közé [mennek.]

For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Cei vii, în adevăr, măcar ştiu că vor muri; dar cei morţi nu ştiu nimic şi nu mai au nicio răsplată, fiindcă până şi pomenirea li se uită.

For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.

Mert mindenkinek van reménysége, aki az élők közé tartozik. Mert jobb az élő kutya, mint a döglött oroszlán.

Mert akárkinek, valaki minden élők közé csatlakozik, van reménysége; mert jobb az élő eb, hogynem a megholt oroszlán.

Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

Şi dragostea lor, şi ura lor, şi pizma lor demult au şi pierit, şi niciodată nu vor mai avea parte de tot ce se face sub soare.

Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and forever they have no more share in all that is done under the sun.

Mert az élők tudják, hogy meghalnak, de a halottak semmit sem tudnak, és jutalmuk sincs többé, mivel még az emléküket is elfelejtik.

Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.

Du-te, dar, de mănâncă-ţi pâinea cu bucurie şi bea-ţi cu inimă bună vinul; căci demult a găsit Dumnezeu plăcere în ce faci tu acum.

Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do.

Szeretetük, gyűlöletük és vágyaik is immár mind elmúltak, és többé nincs semmi részük abban, ami a nap alatt történik.

Mind szeretetök, mind gyűlöletök, mind gerjedezésök immár elveszett; és többé semmi részök nincs semmi dologban, a mely a nap alatt történik.

Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.

Hainele să-ţi fie albe în orice vreme, şi untdelemnul să nu-ţi lipsească de pe cap.

Let your garments be always white. Let not oil be lacking on your head.

Edd hát csak örömmel kenyeredet, és igyad jó szívvel borodat, mert immár kedvesek Istennek a cselekedeteid!

No azért egyed vígassággal a te kenyeredet, és igyad jó szívvel a te borodat; mert immár kedvesek Istennek a te cselekedetid!

Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.

Gustă viaţa cu nevasta pe care o iubeşti, în tot timpul vieţii tale deşarte pe care ţi-a dat-o Dumnezeu sub soare, în această vreme trecătoare; căci aceasta îţi este partea în viaţă în mijlocul trudei cu care te osteneşti sub soare.

Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun.

Ruháid legyenek mindig fehérek, és fejedről ne hiányozzon az olaj.

A te ruháid mindenkor legyenek fejérek, és az olaj a te fejedről el ne fogyatkozzék.

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Tot ce găseşte mâna ta să facă, fă cu toată puterea ta! Căci, în Locuinţa morţilor în care mergi, nu mai este nici lucrare, nici chibzuială, nici ştiinţă, nici înţelepciune!

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.

Élvezd az életet feleségeddel együtt, akit szeretsz, hiábavaló életedben, amelyet Isten adott neked a nap alatt, hiábavaló életed minden napján, mert ez az osztályrészed életedben és munkádban, mellyel fáradozol a nap alatt.

Éld életedet a te feleségeddel, a kit szeretsz, a te hiábavaló életednek minden napjaiban, a melyeket [Isten] adott néked a nap alatt, a te hiábavalóságodnak minden napjaiban; mert ez a te részed a te életedben és a te munkádban, melylyel munkálódol a nap alatt.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

Am mai văzut apoi sub soare că nu cei iuţi aleargă, că nu cei viteji câştigă războiul, că nu cei înţelepţi câştigă pâinea, nici cei pricepuţi, bogăţia, nici cei învăţaţi, bunăvoinţa, ci toate atârnă de vreme şi de împrejurări.

Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.

Ami kezed ügyébe kerül, vidd véghez erőd szerint, mert nem lesz cselekvés, megfontolás, tudás és bölcsesség a holtak hazájában, ahová mész.

Valamit hatalmadban van cselekedni erőd szerint, azt cselekedjed; mert semmi cselekedet, okoskodás, tudomány és bölcseség nincs a Seolban, a hová menendő vagy.

For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

Căci omul nu-şi cunoaşte nici măcar ceasul, întocmai ca peştii prinşi în mreaja nimicitoare şi ca păsările prinse în laţ; ca şi ei sunt prinşi şi fiii oamenilor în vremea nenorocirii, când vine fără veste nenorocirea peste ei.

For man does not know his time. Like fish that are taken in an evil net, and like birds that are caught in a snare, so the children of man are snared at an evil time, when it suddenly falls upon them.

Még azt is láttam a nap alatt, hogy nem a gyorsak győznek a futásban, és nem az erőseké a diadal, nem a bölcseké a kenyér, nem az okosaké a gazdagság, és nem a tudósoké a jóindulat. Mert minden a maga ideje és sorsa szerint történik.

Fordítván magamat látám a nap alatt, hogy nem a gyorsaké a futás, és nem az erőseké a viadal, és nem a bölcseké a kenyér, és nem az okosoké a gazdagság, és nem a tudósoké a kedvesség; hanem idő szerint és történetből lesznek mindezek.

This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:

Am mai văzut următoarea înţelepciune sub soare şi mi s-a părut mare.

I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great to me.

Az ember nem ismeri a számára kijelölt időt. Amint a halakat kifogja a veszedelmes háló, és amint a madarakat tőrbe ejtik, úgy ejtik el az emberek fiait a gonosz idején, amikor az hirtelen rájuk tör.

Mert nem is tudja az ember az ő idejét; mint a halak, melyek megfogatnak a gonosz hálóban, és mint a madarak, melyek megfogatnak a tőrben, miképen ezek, azonképen megfogatnak az emberek fiai a gonosznak idején, mikor az eljő reájok hirtelenséggel.

There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:

Era o mică cetate, cu puţini oameni în ea; şi a venit asupra ei un împărat puternic, a împresurat-o şi a ridicat mari întărituri împotriva ei.

There was a little city with few men in it, and a great king came against it and besieged it, building great siegeworks against it.

Ezt is nagy bölcsességnek láttam a nap alatt:

Ezt is bölcseségnek láttam a nap alatt, és ez én előttem nagy volt.

Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

În ea se afla un om sărac, dar înţelept, care a scăpat cetatea cu înţelepciunea lui. Şi nimeni nu se gândise la omul acela sărac.

But there was found in it a poor, wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that poor man.

Volt egy kicsiny város, és abban egy kevés ember. És eljött az ellenség: egy hatalmas király, aki körülvette, és nagy ostromművet épített ellene.

[Tudniillik, hogy egy] kicsiny város [volt,] és abban kevés ember [volt,] és eljött az ellen hatalmas király, és azt körülvette, és az ellen nagy erősségeket épített.

Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

Atunci am zis: „Mai bună este înţelepciunea decât tăria!” Totuşi înţelepciunea săracului este dispreţuită, şi nimeni nu-l ascultă.

But I say that wisdom is better than might, though the poor man’s wisdom is despised and his words are not heard.

De találtak a városban egy szegény embert, aki bölcs volt, és bölcsességével megszabadította a várost, ám senki sem emlékezett meg arról a szegény emberről.

És találtatott abban [egy] szegény ember, a ki bölcs volt, és az ő bölcseségével a várost megszabadította; de senki meg nem emlékezett arról a szegény emberről.

The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

Cuvintele înţelepţilor, ascultate în linişte, sunt mai de preţ decât strigătele unuia care stăpâneşte între nebuni.

The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools.

Akkor azt mondtam: jobb a bölcsesség, mint az erő, de a szegény bölcsességét lenézik, és beszédét nem hallgatják meg.

Akkor én azt mondám: jobb a bölcseség az erősségnél; de a szegénynek bölcsesége útálatos, és az ő beszédit nem hallgatják meg.

Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.

A bölcsek nyugodt beszédére kell inkább hallgatni, mint a bolondok közt uralkodónak kiáltására.

Jobb a bölcsesség a harci szerszámoknál, de egy bűnös sok jót leronthat.

[Jobb a bölcsesség a hadakozó szerszámoknál; és egy bűnös sok jót veszt el.]

A döglött légytől büdös lesz és megerjed a kenőcskészítő kenete. Ugyanúgy egy kis balgaság hatásosabb a bölcsességnél és a tisztességnél.

[A megholt legyek a patikáriusnak kenetit megbüdösítik, megerjesztik; [azonképen] hathatósabb a bölcseségnél, tisztességnél egy kicsiny balgatagság.]

A bölcs ember szíve jobb keze felől van, a bolond szíve pedig a bal keze felől.

[A bölcs embernek szíve az ő jobbkezénél [van;] a bolondnak pedig szíve balkezénél.]

Bármelyik úton jár is a bolond, értelme hiányos, és mindenkinek elárulja, hogy ő bolond.

[A bolond, mikor az úton jár is, az ő elméje hiányos, és mindennek hirdeti, hogy ő bolond.]
